cold water

("Cold Water" by Damien Rice)

Cold, cold water surrounds me now
And all I've got is your hand
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Or am I lost?

Love one's daughter
Allow me that
And I can't let go of your hand
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Or am I lost?

Cold, cold water surrounds me now
And all I've got is your hand
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Lord, can you hear me now?
Or am I lost?

I was listening to someone I haven't heard in a long time, Lisa Loeb. My favorites are, "You Say", "I Do", and "Wishing Heart".

The question "can you hear me now" reminds me of the classic 'footprints'; the story about looking back on life as a record imprinted in the sand in the form of footprints, a documentation of your living life. At one point Jesus is asked: "why during the lowest points of my life, are there only one set of footprints. You have forsaken me, abandonned me, left me when I was most in neeed!" Jesus replies: "it was at those points that I carried you." Regardless of whether you are religious or not, I think this is a beautiful story reminding us not to grieve our losses too much. The panick expressed in this poem reminds me of that human inclination to blame others despite the fact that they are the ones that keep us going.

Damien is one of my favorites. I saw him live last summer from about 15 feet away, and i literally had tears welted up in my eyes the whole time. Nothing like taking an acoustic guitar and pain and making everyone else feel it too ;-)

sirbarrett, wow i can't believe i never responded to this beautiful insightful comment you left here. i do know the Footprints story and i have always loved it! I love how you said how we shouldn't concentrate so much on blaming & instead look at them as people helping us grow by learning from the experience. you always leave amazing comments that leave me thinking, thanks :)

jaxe :: wow, that's cool. i will have to ask you for a recommended cd of his.
